Understanding Pet Allergies: Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

Posted on 30 July 2025

Just like humans, pets can suffer from allergies that affect their comfort and well-being. Understanding what triggers these allergic reactions and how to manage them is key to helping your furry friend live a happy, itch-free life.

Common Causes of Pet Allergies

Pet allergies are typically caused by one of three main sources:

  • Environmental Allergens: Pollen, dust mites, mould, and grass can trigger allergic reactions, especially during certain seasons.

  • Food Allergies: Some pets develop sensitivities to ingredients such as beef, chicken, dairy, or grains in their diet.

  • Flea Allergies: A single flea bite can cause intense itching in pets with flea allergy dermatitis.

Other less common triggers include household cleaning products, perfumes, fabrics, or even certain shampoos.

Recognising the Symptoms

Allergic reactions in pets often show up through their skin, but may also affect their digestive or respiratory systems. Watch out for:

  • Constant scratching, licking, or biting

  • Red, inflamed, or flaky skin

  • Hair loss or hot spots

  • Ear infections or head shaking

  • Sneezing or watery eyes

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea (more common with food allergies)

If your pet is showing any of these symptoms persistently, it’s best to consult your vet.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Your veterinarian may conduct skin tests, elimination diets, or blood work to determine the exact allergen. Once identified, treatments can include:

  • Antihistamines or anti-inflammatory medications to relieve itching

  • Medicated shampoos to soothe the skin

  • Flea control products for flea-related allergies

  • Hypoallergenic diets for food sensitivities

  • Immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops) for long-term management

Managing the environment by cleaning your pet’s bedding regularly and reducing exposure to known allergens also helps.

A Lifelong Commitment

While pet allergies may not be curable, they can be effectively managed. With the right diagnosis, ongoing care, and regular vet check-ups, your pet can enjoy a healthy, comfortable life despite their sensitivities.
